Hi Bianca! I’ve been reading your blog a lot these past couple of days and found it really helpful since I am considering medical school in Budapest right now. I am an american and will be applying with two other of my friends and I have a question regarding application: You said your boyfriend hadn’t taken a biology class before taking the entrance exam. Is that correct? Doesn’t Semmelweis require all applicants to have taken biology, general chemistry, organic chem, and physics before applying or am I incorrect? Any information would be truly helpful! thanks! – K

      Hi Kiva,

Thanks for reading my blog – I’m happy to hear that you are finding it helpful!

From what I understand, the admission requirements to Semmelweis vary depending on the country you are applying from. Students applying from Norway (like us) were required to pass an entrance exam with 3 sections: chemistry, biology and English. We also had to pass a sort of oral exam/interview. My boyfriend hadn’t taken a biology class before, yet passed these after studying on his own.

I not entirely sure how it works when applying from the states, but I heard from one girl that she didn’t take an entrance exam or do an interview. She said she was admitted based on her bachelor’s degree in Biology. Physics wasn’t a pre-req when we applied.

I can ask some other Americans what their admission requirements were like if it would help. Otherwise I recommend getting in touch with the school and/or counselor in the states. Don’t want to waste time taking classes you don’t need to take.

Otherwise, best of luck with your applications!

      -Bianca

Thank you so much for this information, it’s extremely helpful! I will email Semmelweis about the application requirements and hopefully I receive a clear response. If you do hear from other american’s experience in applying, I would really appreciate it!

Not a problem! Happy to help 🙂 Sounds good. The English Secretariat make take some time getting back to you, but they should be able to answer all your questions. You could also try ISAS, the International Student Association at Semmelweis (isas.hu) – they are really helpful! Otherwise, I’ll let you know if I find anything out.

  • Hey Bianca,
My name is Raageshwori & I am from Nepal.
I study in an American International School in India, and I have taken AP Biology, Chemistry and Physics for the past two years.
I have my entrance exam & interview coming up in two weeks and I was wondering if I would be able to pass by just doing some basic review and by watching Khan Academy & Bozeman Biology videos?
Or do I need to be more prepared?

    Thanks 🙂

    • Buda B says:

      Hi Raageshwori,

I can only speak from my experience, as people’s preparation seems to vary greatly and it depends on a lot of different factors. I studied chemistry and biology in high school and college, but hadn’t reviewed them in some years before my exam. To prepare, I spent 2-3 weeks watching khan academy videos and looking through the review books I’ve posted in the resources section of my blog. Since you’ve studied these topics recently, you should be ok with some review. But you should look through the review books and see how your knowledge compares and whether or not you need more review.

      Best of luck!
      Bianca
