Hungarian Semi-Final and that Christmas Feeling

One down and four to go!
Today was my Hungarian semi-final and I am so happy to be 1 exam into final season! You’ll have to excuse my uninhibited interchanging of the words semi-final and final – consistency is not my strong suit in that regard. The majority of our subjects are full year courses, so these exams are, in fact, semi-finals. Sorry if this is confusing anyone!
That said, here is what my exam was like:
Written part: 25 questions (which I recognized from example tests in the back of the book – issued by the school)
Oral: There were two examiners and I had to wait for almost two hours before it was my turn. My questions were as follows:
- Where I come from
- How big the city is
- How many million inhabitants there are there
- Where I live in Budapest
- The size and description of my apartment
- Then I chose a slip of paper with the layout of a building and had to describe where 3/4 rooms were on different floors.
- Finally, I chose a picture and was asked to describe it. It was the picture of a market stall and I had to describe the fruits and veggies using prepositions, find drinks in the photo, and finally describe the shopkeeper (which I couldn’t do).
To be honest, I was really unhappy with my performance during the exam. For the hours before going in I had reviewed so many different scenarios, none of which I was being tested on, and I could not formulate my words correctly. I ended up getting a 4 – which was good! – but I feel like I could have gotten a 5 if I had just calmed down and spent maybe a couple more hours reviewing. Progress not perfection!
Now it’s time to settle in and get comfy with some anatomy. It’s day 2 of my proposed study schedule and I am already behind, so I have some study-technique re-evaluating to do! I’m really hoping to be done going through everything at least once before Christmas so that I can maybe-possibly-somehow enjoy Christmas eve. Since my exam is on the 27th, there isn’t going to be too much Christmasing going on over here. I tried to decorate the apartment a little bit with some Santa figurines and a Christmas star that we picked up on the way home from studying one day. It’s not a lot, but it’s nice nonetheless.
On the way home from the gym yesterday, Skjalg picked me up a couple of little “presents”. He got me a hot-cold pack for my back (achy from sitting and studying all day) and a magnifying glass for my anatomy book. While browsing through our Yokochi anatomy atlas he read a note saying that the images were too high-resolution for the human eye to see and that it recommended using a magnifying glass to see the detail. Funny how little things can make your day so much better 🙂
